Inupiaq Spirit Wheel – King IslandSpirit wheels are traditional story-telling devices. These native Alaska-made wheels tell hunting tales.They are made of whale, walrus ivory, seal, baleen, bone, feathers, antlers.
John Kokuluk is the artist/carver from King Island, AK, which is 40 miles off he coast of Nome in the Bering Sea. Six inches in diameter, this is an excellent example of Inupiaq carving. Most spirit wheels that I have seen have four to eight “arms”. This piece has twenty, highly unusual.
