Shikami Oni
LION SPIRIT- a demonic spirit that has a fierce, scowling face. It is used in Noh productions to express masculine rage and extreme agitation. This mask was an unfinished wood mask from the mid- Showa Period (circa 1950-1960). However, it has recently been refinished with incredible detail using traditional methods. That being said, the mask was originally carved with great skill and an obvious attention to detail, adding to the quality of the now finished product. It was originally carved from a light weight wood. The wood is most likely hinoke – Japanese cypress.
