Yangban, the aristocrat. The character looks rather jolly, but sometimes he has people flogged to death if they insult him. A skilled actor can make the mask look cheerful by holding his head high, or menacing by dropping his chin.
Color plays an important role in Korean masks. The bright, vibrant colors help to establish the age and race of the figure. In some masks, there are moving parts, such as eyes that wink or shift and mouths that move
The finest Korean masks are usually carved from alder wood, but others are made of gourds or rice-straw. The masks are attached to a hood of black cloth, which serves to hold the mask in place, and also resembles hair.
